On the Spiritual Search, Give Applause Where It’s Due

Sometimes in the morning, my toddler toddles into my office, points at my guitar, and demands (demands!) a song. Or, as she calls it, a “sheeaw!” In case you’re wondering, yes — it is as cute as it sounds. I swear. Anyway, today we sang. I played her favorite: Twinkle Twinkle Little Star followed by the Alphabet Song (followed by Twinkle Twinkle again). In case you’re wondering, yes — it is as redundant as it sounds. I swear.

So, there we were playing sheeaw and having a good time as usual, but today, something was different. Today, when I reached the end of the song, she clapped. That’s right. I got applause. My only audience for my musical talents is usually the dust particles floating in the air as I play, but today I received applause! Boy, did that feel good.

Now, after the applause, my kiddo bumbled down the hall to find my wife in our master bathroom. Apparently, walking around in our shower brings her a joy equaled only by sheeaw. But that’s okay! I kept that wonderful feeling with me all day as I worked and did my other assorted duties.

Look folks, we never know when something small we do will bring great joy. But you already know from reading The Nobody Bible that you have opportunities to do things like that every day. And building people up feels so good. You know that hate-mongering isn’t the world’s norm, even though it’s the news’ norm. So today, if you’re looking for something “spiritual” to do, find someone doing something mundane and tell them they’re doing a good job. You don’t have to applaud. Just give a simple compliment.

After that, you can do whatever else brings you joy. Go walk around in the shower! I hear that’s fun.
